“Omg. I can’t wait to watch TV.”
It’s literally what I always say after a super jampacked day or an overly stressful one.
There’s just something about watching a good TV show that relaxes my mind and MY LIFE, allowing me to jump into the fictional world of someone else’s — even if it’s just for about 45 minutes.
It’s honestly such a great way to decompress; in my case if a good book isn’t within grabbing distance (simply, I’ve snuck into bed and I’m too lazy to get up EVA). I even get so lost in the fictional story of it all I sometimes forget that it’s just that… fictional.
So obvi, you can imagine what it’s like for me when a fave of mine gets cancelled… I’m literally devastated.
Some of THE BEST SHOWS, have been cancelled for one reason or the other and it sucks blue balls LOL. Once, I even went as far as emailing the network I was so pissed about a cancellation. However, it’s been two years and that email has still remained unanswered— not a single alert. It’s 2017 man, can we get read receipts on emails already?!
Yes, I setup my email so that I’d know when they responded.
No, I wasn’t very polite in said email.
So. INSTEAD, of sending more non-polite-ish emails LOL (that don’t get responded to) — I’m taking a walk down memory lane, by binging some of my faves and sharing why you should binge watch them too:
ONE TREE HILL
The best millennial storyline of my existence. The storyline that could keep going and going without ever seeming like there was nothing more to say. The show that pulled at my heartstrings, and yet could make me fume with unresolved anger. Needless to say, One Tree Hill gave me all the feels and tons of chills. I was pretty young when I first started watching the show even though it was a good five years after it initially premiered in 2003. The show embodied everything I wanted to experience ‘when I grew up’ and gave me every reason to be cautious of boys who played basketball or rocked out at bars. Interestingly enough, I fell off the show for awhile after I initially began watching it a few seasons in. I recharged my love for it and began watching again in high school; the perfect time to relate to a show like this. One Tree Hill takes you on a journey through the lives of the characters and in all the nine seasons, Brooke (total bad ass) remained my spirit animal. The music was so relative to life and realistic experiences and the quotes… gaaaah. They make you think about where you are, who you are, and why there may be more out there for you to discover. It was a coming of age show, and till the end could make me weep at the sound of Gavin DeGraw’s voice in the final scene.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU
Now this. This right here. This was my jizzlejaaaam. I MISS IT SOOO MUCH. I’ve legit watched this entire series AT LEAST five or six times, and each time (after 3-6 months) it feels like a new series all over again. This show told the story of two sisters; Val & Holly, one older and the other younger, living together in the bustling city of New York. I looooved their relationship because it was authentic and so relatable omg. They bickered hard, but loved even harder and that’s the reality of most sibling relationships. They were so funny and that intro song… BOOOY. Could get me off the couch and in front of the TV dancing along while the credits ran through. The show could be corny and super cheesy, but that was the most endearing part of it. As a viewer, I knew to never take the show too seriously (even though sometimes I did) and take it for what it was. The overall light hearted nature of the show makes it easy to start watching and never stop watching. Watching this show also does a great job of giving you two different perspectives from the life of a teenager and that of a grown woman. Matter fact, I’m loading up the episodes as we speak. I’m 9 months shy of it and I need my fix.
RIZZOLI & ISLES
When I first found out this show was ending, I actually cried. No scratch that. I weeped profusely. Watching this show always felt like coming home. It was so relatable and consistent though there were twists and turn along the way. It never switched up or loss it’s sense of homeliness that it began with from the very first episode of season 1. I particularly loved it because the friendship of the characters, Maura and Jane, always reminded me of my friendship with my best friend Haley. They were so stinkin’ cute together. Rizzoli and Isles (signifying the last names of those main characters, Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles) had the perfect mixture of humor (like it actually made me laugh) and seriousness. The characters on the show were soooo family oriented. I legit felt like I was a member of the family every time I tuned in. The silent message (keep the love for your true friends close and your family closer) remained a constant throughout each season, till the very end. It was my favorite show to grab a bite to eat and get a good laugh in, and shed a tear or two maybe.
CSI: MIAMI
Remember when I said I weeped profusely when Rizzoli and Isles ended? Well. For this show I LOST IT when I found out it was coming to an end. You guys, hear me when I say this, loud and clear — THIS WAS MY SHOW. From the moment the guy screaming in the intro song would start to the beautiful scenery of Miami being show throughout the episode, this show was all that and a bag of chips. It was so freaking good. I loved the procedural aspect of this show while behind that the characters had their own intertwining issues going on. Horatio Caine and his infamous black sunglasses, were the integral part of the show. There was something so addicting about his character that made doing much of anything else while watching, impossible. He was a badass through and through. So you can imagine I completely lost my shit one night, when I tweeted him after I found out the show was ending, and he not only tweeted me back. BUT followed me as well. BRB fangirling all over again lmao. Catching bad guys was Horatio Caine’s (real name: David Caruso) specialty and with the help of his team, he did it so dang well. After a whopping 10 seasons, I guess they all needed a lifestyle change much to my disappointment.
SEX AND THE CITY
Sex anyone? Though this show got its fair share of flack, it was one of my favorites to air on special network; HBO. I looooooved it. Every episode made me feel like I was single, independent, and in control of my own life living in one of the busiest cities in the world. Many people who didn’t care for it (I believe), either couldn’t get past the sex scene indulgence they believed the writers possessed OR the fact that women were taking more of the control in their day to day lives. This show made me feel like us women could do and be ANYTHING we put our minds to. From Carrie, the one I seem to relate to the most watching it now, to the fearlessness Samantha possessed in spades — the show was an integral part of the reemergence of feminism! This show made America’s women feel comfortable talking about things that used be so taboo for women to talk about like: finances, sexual experiences, and RELATIONSHIPS most importantly. Each episode literally takes you on a journey and reminds you that us women are made of the tireless skin that renews itself constantly.
BTW, Happy Belated International Women’s Day babyloves.
Not even going to lie babes, I’m thinking of typing another few non-polite-ish emails because I’ve been reminded of too many good shows that got the axe.
In the meantime, check out these TV shows and try not to get too attached. They’re cancelled remember?
xx Thelms
