The Path Between Us

path between us
The Path Between Us, was inspired by a book I read this morning about a soldier coming home permanently and his wife attempting to come to terms with the things he’s seen and done. All the while trying to reach him through it all. Told from her perspective.

There’s this massive path between us that prevents me from getting close enough to you,

It’s almost as if the road block will never be lifted or the obstacle won’t ever move.

It’s figurative of course, preventing a road for passage just the same,

As far it goes and as much as I try to get past it, I’m forced to return toward the road in which I came.

You’ve got your demons and I recognize you’re trying to protect me from them all,

But can’t I be the judge of what facing them with you looks like or deciding if I want to fall?

I’ve made my way down the path between us a few times before I end up getting all turned around,

It’s there that I’ve seen the darkness that consumes you, witnessing it all without you ever making a sound.

I wanted to cry for you because you’ve been through so much; no one should have to see what you’ve seen,

Why can’t memories be washed away when you don’t want to remember anymore and the slate wiped clean?

It’s a tale as old as time I guess, experience is meant to be your greatest teacher,

How else would we end up falling on our knees and baring it all to our local preacher?

This path between us seems determined to remain filled with curves, bumps, and heaps,

But I’m stronger than it thinks and ready to weather the storm with you no matter where it leads.
