It’s no secret that I just started my job as a nurse three months ago! I feel like most of you babes have been with me throughout my nursing school journey and now as I transition to a working gal. In any case, most of you babes are just like me; working millennials!
We’re all out in the workforce trying to make our mark on society. Whether we’re fresh out of school and trying to utilize the skills we spent so much time there attempting to perfect. OR a bit more seasoned in our career of choice, we’re still working millennials! However, no matter what category we fall into, confidence doesn’t always come with the territory. At times, confidence wanes or for newbies like myself — it’s something that is built over time.
So today, I think it’s important to touch on how to establish confidence in the workplace. Keep reading as I share 5 tips to get the ball rolling.
Because here’s the thing. Lord knows we all could use a little bit of confidence to make the day run just a tad bit smoother.
#1 You were destined for the job
Sometimes, understanding where you are is the first step to recognizing and relishing in your power. You didn’t end up in that career field by accident. For whatever reason, before you even knew your path, you were destined for it.
#2 They believe in you, so believe in yourself
You were hired for a reason. Whether you’re a newbie or someone who has been on the job for awhile… the person who hired you believed in you. Do you realize that? Maybe not as much as you should. Sometimes we get so caught up on the excitement that we got the job that we don’t really hone in on what that means. Yes, you snagged the job. No question. But take the time to ask yourself how. During your interview you came across as someone they believed would be up to the task. Frankly they had a gut feeling that you were just the addition to the crew that entire company needed. It’s important to remember that on days when your confidence wanes.
#3 Identify someone you admire, so as you lean on them they equally pour into you
This is key! Finding someone that you admire in the workplace is so vital to your growth. In my situation, there’s someone I work with that I greatly respect and admire. Her role on our unit is something to revel in. She is seasoned, smart, driven, and increasingly efficient. All of which are characteristics, I desire to continue to display at work constantly. As I lean on her for clarification in the workplace a few things occur because of that. For starters, she sees my passion and the dedication I have to becoming the best. Two, she’s empowered to continue setting the great example she has because she realizes I’m watching. Lastly, it pushes her to pour into me because she respects my passion. All of which will ultimately build my confidence in the workplace. If you apply this to your situation, your confidence will grow as well.
#4 Don’t fake the funk, but don’t tell everyone about it either
Basically, don’t try too hard to come off overly confident, but don’t share with everyone how low your confidence is. Not everyone wants to see you succeed. Disclose those sort of things with people that you trust. Preferably people outside of the workplace who can genuinely help you brainstorm ways to build up confidence.
#5 Shy away from perfection and lean into realistic goals
Believe it or not, building confidence has very little to do with attaining perfectionism. Why, you may wonder? Well perfectionism is a ploy of thing for one. As we seek to attain it, it moves farther and farther away from us. The ploy being that just when you feel it’s in your grasp, it slips away like objects to greasy hands. You’re then left with a bitch of emotions: frustration, doubt, and resentment. None of which are conducive to building confidence. So LET THAT SHIT GOOOOO. Lean into goals that are realistic. Ones that can be accomplished.
When it’s all said and done it really is that simple. With heart for the position that you’re in, all will be well.
After all, it has no choice but to be! We’re working millennials trying to make our mark in the world remember?
P.S. How good is today’s look in this post? I’ve always been super into dressing up the professional look. Granted I do wear scrubs in the position I’m in. However that doesn’t stop me from bringing out the good stuff when a situation calls for it.
Details on this look: Nasty Gal dress, H&M white button down, Dolce Vita heels, and Topshop purse (no longer available) 🙁
