THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

Original poetry by Thelma, copyrighted, not to be shared without including author recognition.

I was raised on values, one of them being the importance of the company you keep,

It goes without saying that the people you hang around can determine how far you leap

How much progress you make in life and even where it takes you,

Yes you’re in the driver’s seat, but the passenger seat is a whole other beast boo

They have the potential to be the enemy of progress and steer you off your path,

Baby the company you keep can have harmful affects on your life that are sure to last

But let’s have a round of applause for the right company,

the company that cheers you on when you want to give up

The soldiers that remind you that you’re the gift, the talent, the firecracker — you’re more than just a stroke of random luck

They make it clear that you matter and your accomplishments matter too,

That positivity that they speak into you? Yeah that right there? That’s what’s sure to last boo.

If you don’t take anything from this, remember that though you may be the influence — being negatively influenced is not so far fetched,

Those whispers in your ears from “friends” at times can surely leave you stretched —

Too thin and too wide with no purposeful aim,

Resulting in stagnant growth with most of everything you reach feeling mundanely the same.

It’s a wonder mama always said — you are the company you keep

I hope this poetry piece serves as a reminder, hell a cautionary tale,

Just before you take that next big leap.

With Love,

Thelms
