Happy Friday y’all! If you’re an OG member of the With Love, Thelms family then Being A Tourist In My City should sound pretty familiar. Last year around this time, I advocated for us babes to periodically become tourists in our own cities. Missed it? Catch up here.
In the blog post, I went on to chat about the benefits that come with exploring the city you’re from and how impactful doing so can be. To some it may sound silly because — How wouldn’t you know the ins and outs of a city you were born and raised in? But y’all it is possible. It is more than possible to experience a city in varying ways depending on the point you happen to be at in life. For example. It isn’t safe or realistic to assume that the way we saw our hometowns as a child/pre-adolescent will be the same way we see it as an adult.
I mean, am I right?
That’s next to impossible. Which makes the concept of exploration at different points so vital. Dependent on the experiences we may be facing or the place we are at mentally — perceptions do change.
So keep reading as I yet again become a tourist in my own city in the River Oaks area. What can I say? My perception too has changed in the past year.
River Oaks Area
If you’re not familiar with the River Oaks area, not to worry. Let’s take a second to get you familiarized!
River Oaks area, nestled between The Galleria and the Montrose area is a place associated with wealth and luxury. There you can find places that will appeal to:
the food junkie within you, the shopaholic you may or may have not been aware existed, and the baller you are or hope to become one day because the homes in this area… wow.
It’s also easy to perceive an unlikely amount of cleanliness not common to other areas in Houston. Weird thing to note? Maybe, but it’s truuuuue. Everything there is so clean that sometimes I feel like I’m stepping into Houston’s version of Beverly Hills lol.
Anyway.
Last weekend, my good girlfriend and I became tourists in our own city. Visiting the River Oaks area like newbies. We ate out at a new restaurant that was amazing. I did a review on it and shared my thoughts in Wednesday’s blog post, and after, we set out on a little exploration excursion.
We walked through the River Oaks Shopping District and got better acquainted with the shopping opportunities housed there. Y’all we even managed to come across a live band and dance for a few seconds to their music before stumbling upon a really awesome art installation called Sky Waves.
Sky Waves is a “creative collaboration between River Oaks District and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.” It was created to “celebrate the 50th anniversary” of NASA’s Apollo mission. This mission notable for putting mankind on the moon in 1969.
Like c’mon? How cool is that?
There are benefits to becoming a tourist in your own city I tell you. Real time benefits LOL.
I am now off to sleep because through work and hanging with friends — this week has been pretty draining.
