Summertime fine. It’s on my brain heavy when the summer season comes around. I mean honestly, it’s on everyone’s brain. The months of May to late July are usually when everyone wants to look their best selves. Although, looking our best should be a goal all year long — there’s this intensity to specifically accomplish it during the summer. So naturally when a girlfriend from nursing school suggested we do the green smoothie diet for 10 days with assurance that we’d be 10lbs lighter, I jumped at it.
After all, how hard could a 10 day smoothie diet really be?
Really freaking hard, okay.
A 10 day smoothie can and is really freaking hard.
Besides wanting to be summertime fine, I went full throttle with this diet because I wanted to look amazing for my upcoming trip to Los Angeles later that month (May). I knew that I would be wearing swimsuits often, and figured it wouldn’t hurt to drop a 10 pounder quick fast and in a hurry.
After shopping for more fruits than I have ever bought in one grocery setting, I was ready to begin the following day.
However, before I jump into the day to day breakdown of the diet — here are some quick facts y’all should know:
Each day of the 10 day smoothie diet, you are required to drink three smoothies.
For each day, there’s a new smoothie recipe you must follow for the entirety of the day.
You are allowed to substitute one of the smoothies for two boiled eggs.
Water is your best friend on this diet, trust me.
Okay, so day to day breakdown of the 10 day smoothie diet.
Day 1: The first day was terribly difficult. All I kept thinking about was chewing on my food. I mean the best parts of what eating is really made of, if you catch my drift. Eating a boiled egg for dinner was the highlight of that first day.
Day 2: I woke up hungry. So hungry that I’m almost positive I had a dream about fried chicken and mash potatoes with gravy. It wasn’t necessarily that I was starving, but I wasn’t used to my stomach not being overly full. I nearly died this day because I was sure I was seeing yummy food everywhere.
Day 3: Smoothie drinking started to get easier, I think? I began feeling relieved this day because making smoothies three times a day, stopped me from always thinking about what I was going to eat each day. I examined myself in the mirror after my shower that night and didn’t notice much difference, but I was optimistic.
Day 4: The fourth day was sooo much easier. I felt so excited to make my smoothies this day. It was still hard going to school with smoothies and seeing everyone around me chowing down on food. Well except for the babe who was doing the diet with me. Having a partner to hold my feet to the fire was necessary.
Day 5: It’s the fifth day! The babe I’m doing this with and I were so pumped to have made it halfway through! I had two boiled eggs for breakfast and I literally never enjoyed boiled eggs more than I did that day. After my shower, I examined my body and omg. I noticed a difference. My stomach was flatter (not bloat-y at all). My face appeared as trim as it could be (I have a naturally chubby face).
Day 6: I was pretty much over it. I was over sipping on my breakfast, lunch, and dinner instead of chewing on it. I nearly died this day as well because I was just OVER IT.
Day 7: This day was a blur because I was in the thick of finals and everything else.
Day 8: So close, but so far away from the finish line. I’m not even going to lie to you guys, I almost quit this day. I was still feeling over it, but felt a compulsion to finish what I had started, far greater than quitting. So I kept at it. Examined myself in the mirror again after my workout and was happy with what I saw.
Day 9: Someone told me I looked smaller omg! I remember being so dang pumped this day because someone else noticed. My high waist denim jeans fit so good, with tons of stomach space to spare. I started thinking that I was losing most of the weight in my boobs, stomach, and face.
Day 10: WHOOOOOO! Is all I could think about that day. I finished all my smoothies, but hated every second of it. It might have been because I knew it was the last day.
All in all, I did lose about 8lbs and in the grand scheme of things was able to maintain 5lbs of the weight loss. After finishing the diet I did come to realize two things:
one, 10 day smoothie diets are not my thing &
two, as much as this diet was about the weight loss I believe it was also about challenging my self discipline.
